Wiki so far.

I have not written anything on the wiki yet, but I plan on adding some information on the MMORPG page. I've written a paper on it this semester and I feel I've found some nice possible updates for that page. Should work on it soon.

The Next New Thing

The more and more I watch the television, the more I find commercials with references to Facebook and Twitter. It seems interesting that there are so many companies now that uses these online programs. Even phones have internet access to these now too. It seems that soon, facebook will be plagued with more company advertisements than it already is. It seems this would be inevitable. Perhaps the next new thing could be another internet service that allows people to get together to post and maybe even video "calls" much like skype. All the while with less advertisements to go with it.

Privacy and Confidentiality

New media raises some questions when it comes to videos and sometimes even blog posts. Not all videos are originally about the person who posted it up. Sometimes it is embarrassing videos of others that they have caught. Videos could also get in to violations of copyrights, but that's not for here.
Blogs or tweets could also be bring up questions of privacy and confidentiality. Again like videos, many things can be written about others. And since twitter and other social sites have huge connections, it can do what word of mouth could do in a much faster rate. Embarrassing incidents and horrible lies could spread around like a wild fire.

Advice to Baruch College

New media could improve the learning environment of students. When it comes to discussion boards, it can give students time to think about topics, post and respond. It could be a great way for many classes to get students to think about their classes after they have left the room already.
Introduction to more uses of videos in-class would be well received also. Many students in the current, and future generations would be in constant contact with videos from the internet. Use tools online tools to teach in class like videos would actually help the learning process.

Twitter Discussions

That was lot more hectic that i had first thought. The site itself is simple, but its harsh on the eyes to navigate through all those tweets to find some that i felt i could comment on. Just seems like too much going on at a time, and too limited on how much one could write.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can cater to many differing backgrounds and has many uses. Some uses these worlds simply as a way to get away from the real world, to play as something else. Others can use it as a fun new way to have meetings from people around the world. From "At Hearing, Real and Virtual Worlds Collide", even large companies and government officials could use virtual worlds to meet together and chat about anything. In their meeting many questions were asked because, "in an era in which technologies can catch on and become mainstream quickly, the subcommittee on telecommunications and the Internet wanted to know some basics."
Using the technology could be very useful because it can give a sense of presence being there in the virtual world with others. As if you are almost physically attending something. On the other hand, it could also be choppy, unrealistic, and might even get out of hand if people aren't even really at their computer screens.
I personally enjoy mmorpgs and the idea of a virtual reality. I have great hopes in its developments as both a great use to be used professionally, and recreationally.

Social Networking

These social networks seem to be a very easy way to keep in touch with people. People can start an account with something like Facebook, add friends, whether from their work place or from school and BAM, they open up a whole new network for themselves. Friends of friends, new people from states away, suddenly you are connected, whether you talk or not, you gain a whole network to utilize. The networking isn't always the best part of it either. Some use these sites just to keep in touch with people they might not normally call or see too often. Others use it just for the little games the sites have.
Facebook has a very good update system where people can post twitter-like messages. Its growth can be attributed to how easy and how effective and fun it can be. As written by Virginia Heffernan in Being There, they are like "spontaneous bursts of being: perfect."
Perhaps in the future, there can be more uses to help find jobs or even become a closer knit craigslist.

Check out Social Networking Sites

So I have used Myspace in the past and currently have a Facebook. So many of my views and comparison might be a bit outdated even by looking at it now. Myspace seems to try to place as much as they can in their site, but causes it to be a bit clumsy to navigated and it looks very condensed. Facebook does the same thing with the content but places them in a better way by having multiple pages to navigate through. Seems like Myspace has added little games too as Facebook has too. Restaurant city time.. heh.

Blogs vs Wiki

So blog and wiki's are the topic of the day, and I guess if i look down one post so is new vs old media. Any way, blogs are more personalized than wiki. Blogs also require very limited collaboration with others unlike a wiki. Blogs can even be seen as personal web pages and the posts on it go in reverse order of time and day. Wiki's are better built for companies. Many people can contribute to a wiki and it can become more of a source of knowledge from a group rather than a personal account like blogs. One example of wiki being used by companies can be seen with Tony Pagliarulo, the vice president of EMC. "Because his team had the most current information, they were able to make better decisions and get the project done faster."(http://www.cio.com/article/336818/More_on_How_to_Build_Your_Own_Wikipedia)
Both blogs and wiki seems to be fairly easy to use and even have many of the same tools like links and general support team for the sites. Since the world is become more connected, its important for information to be more connected too. Wiki's seem to fill this role very well, since it is much like a constant user based encyclopedia. Blog's can also do this, but in a much different way. Blogs could be linked, and people could have a large blog network which talks and comments on others, but that would act much like facebook.com or web forums.
As for how wiki can be used for something new... not sure right now.

In with the new

So old media wasn't always old. With constant changes and evolution to technology, new things come out making something that was new media, become old. So what do we look for the differences in old and new... hm. I guess for our generation (although probably true for past generations too) new media is mainly the better way of sharing information the quickest. So for example, books were once new media. The printing press was created and all was wondrous! Yay! But as time passed, quicker way of getting information through were created like newspapers or fliers. Then when electronics came around, new media started evolving quicker than ever. We now have things like blogs that act like journalism or e-books to replace going to the library.

New Media!

New media is vast and still expanding. It's source of power comes from technology far and wide, and well.. common. The internet is perhaps one of the biggest sources of this new media power. Others such as phones, and computers are technology that runs off the internet for its new media power.
The internet has proved its strength, flexibility and growth since its actual use in 1994. Before the use of the Web, hypertext systems were in control and considered superior. "The power of the Web is evident today, and should have been in 1994 when considered not against other hypertext systems but against its real competitors, then-popular Internet services such as Gopher and WAIS. (Bernerslee2003)" But now in 2010, the Web has grown to unimaginable size and now "it is television and video games that are seen as the Web’s competition (Bernerslee2003).
The internet has tremendous power over the growth of new media because everything feeds off of its energy, whether it is blogging or vlogging or emailing or watching videos or movies, you get the picture, it is all powered by this glorious web.
Old media has evolved to these new options of media because of a need. Speed and accessibility are extremely important. With a computer connected to the web, you can find just about anything, movies to books, museums and forums, it is a vast pool of knowledge accessible to anyone. Radio and TV has been replaced in such a way, and is all else currently changing. It would be foolish to not mention that it isn't always the media that changes the trend and have people follow, sometimes, people move away from the old media, and they just need to follow and catch up.

The world of MMO games.

My research topic is going to involve the gaming world. Online gaming has been growing and becoming more acceptable. The communication with in the game differs immensely from what you would find on online forums, but what might be the cause of this? Also, for many of the players, it has become an active job they work at to improve their "skills". What are causing these games to be more important that some real life affairs? Who knows, lets find out.

New Media Requirements

Well, seems like it was needed to create an account to blog on. Still not quite sure what blogging is and quite intimidated to be honest. But requirements are requirements and they must (almost) always be done (shifty eyes). Anyway, the blog is here, its done and ready to go.
